Labour of Love / Feito com Amor

I have always loved red hair and always pitied the fact that mine didn’t have this colour.

Like most people, that usually wish they had something different from what they were born with, I imagined myself with long wavy red hair instead of the actual straight brown hair that I have.

Therefore, when the ‘Anne of the Green Gables’ cartoons starred on TV, when I was a child, she epitomized what I wished to be: red haired and living free on the countryside.

At that time, during the 80s, we could still play outside with our friends and live great adventures and in summer, our parents would allow us to go outside at night after dinner to the public garden on the back of our building to give leftovers to the stray dogs living in our neighbourhood. Those days made us feel as if we were part of the group of kids from ‘The Famous Five’ or ‘Verano Azul’ TV series – the latter being roughly translated from Spanish to ‘Blue Summer’.

So when I felt the urge of ‘giving life’ to my guardian angel protector of the home, the whole idea of ‘Anne’ came to my mind.

It may strike as odd the fact that I would chose her, when she was an orphan and later adopted by two siblings but to me she symbolizes healthy rebellion, the joy and innocence of children – that do some mischief along the way but the one who hasn’t can throw the first stone – and someone who values love and the fact they finally have a home and someone who cares about us.

As an adult, I read the original version of ‘Anne of the Green Gables’ by Lucy Maud Montgomery which was written in the beginning of the 20^th century and loved it. In this version, which includes excerpts from her journals, the author explains the following: ‘It was a labour of love. Nothing I have ever written gave me so much pleasure to write. I (…) made my “Anne” a real human girl’.

And this was exactly what I was looking for, a guardian angel that protects the home which isn’t perfect but flawed like us, always with a smile to brighten up our hearts and keep away all evil.

I hope you like this Anne who was born from my mind, my hands and my heart and I make Lucy Maud Montgomery’s words my own when she writes about her work: ‘The book may or may not sell well. I wrote it for love, not money… just as everything in life that is born of true love is better than something constructed for mercenary ends’.

Sempre adorei o cabelo ruivo e tinha pena de não ter o cabelo desta cor.

Tal como a maioria das pessoas, que quer sempre ter algo diferente daquilo com que nasceu, eu imaginava-me de longos cabelos ruivos e ondulados em vez dos meus cabelos castanhos e lisos.

Assim sendo, quando começaram a dar desenhos animados da ‘Ana dos Cabelos Ruivos’ quando era miúda, ela era o epíteto do que eu queria ser: ruiva e a viver no campo em liberdade.

Estávamos em plenos anos 80 e nessa altura ainda era possível brincar na rua com os amigos em grandes aventuras e no verão, os pais até nos deixavam saír à noite depois do jantar até ao jardim das traseiras, para dar os restos de comida aos cães sem dono que habitavam as nossas ruas. Esses dias faziam-nos sentir como se fizéssemos parte do grupo de miúdos das séries televisivas ‘Os Cinco’ ou dos do ‘Verão Azul’.

Assim, quando senti a ‘urgente’ necessidade de ‘dar vida’ à minha anjinha protectora do lar, a ideia da Ana veio-me à cabeça.

Pode parecer um pouco estranho – visto que ela era órfã e só mais tarde foi adoptada por dois irmãos – associá-la a um anjo protector do lar mas para mim, ela simboliza a rebeldia saudável, a alegria e inocência das crianças – que vão fazendo alguns disparates mas quem nunca os fez que atire a primeira pedra – e alguém que dá muito valor ao amor e ao facto de ter finalmente um lar e alguém que preocupe connosco.

Já em adulta li na versão original a ‘Ana dos Cabelos Ruivos’ de Lucy Maud Montgomery que foi escrita no início do século XX e adorei. Nesta versão com excertos do seu diário, a autora explica o seguinte: ‘Foi um trabalho feito com amor. Nada que tenha escrito antes me deu tanto prazer escrever. Eu (…) fiz da minha Ana uma rapariga verdadeiramente humana’. Eu (…) fiz da minha Ana uma rapariga verdadeiramente humana’. E era isto mesmo que eu procurava, um anjo protector dos lares que não fosse perfeito mas com defeitos como nós, sempre com um sorriso para nos alegrar os corações e afastar todo o mal.

Espero que gostem desta Ana que saíu da minha mente, das minhas mãos e do meu coração e faço das palavras da Lucy Maud Montgomery as minhas quando esta se refere à sua obra: ‘ O livro pode ou não vender bem. Eu escrevi-o por amor e não por dinheiro… tal como tudo na vida que é feito verdadeiramente por amor é melhor do que algo construído com fins mercenários.’
